The encryption in a given file is tied to your device, so you’ll need your Kindle’s serial number to perform the decryption. ePUBee is a DRM removal freeware that works smoothly to unlock the DRM protection added on ebooks in ePUB, PDF, AZW, AZW3, Mobi, and Prc formats. This is a Python script which strips the DRM from an encrypted Kindle book. Stripping the DRM: ch33s3w0rm/kindle_dedrm. Download and uncompress the lastest version of DeDRM. I’ve got a script that works now, which leans on two other tools to do the heavy lifting: Calibre is a cross-platform open-source suite of e-book software. I prefer solutions that use command-line tools and (ideally) run inside Docker container – they tend to be much more portable between machines. Google suggests that Calibre can do this with the right plugins, but I don’t use Calibre for anything else, and I want to install new software as little as possible. Alternatively, after unzipping you can just install it via Calibres standard UI.

I never bought any books from Microsoft, but I do have a collection of Kindle books, and this story was a reminder to investigate ways to remove the DRM from those. It is famous for its eBook management function, and with proper plugin you can use Calibre to remove DRM from ebooks upon import. They were turning off the DRM servers behind their ebook store, and refunding customers for any books they’d bought. If calibre were to support opening or viewing DRM files it could be trivially modified to be used as a tool for DRM removal which is illegal under todays. A few months ago, Microsoft made headlines when they announced they’d be turning off people’s books.
